A rainstorm over the weekend rendered
over 5,000 homeless at Akwukwu-Igbo, headquarters of Oshimili North
Local Government Area of Delta State, after about 200 houses were
destroyed.
Roofs of houses were blown off and deposited at different places like Ogbe-Iyase, Ogbeani, Umuonai, Ogbeonihe, Umuekeke, Ogbeobi and Achala villages in the community.
Speaking on the incident, the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Majesty, Obi David Azuka, said it was s calamity, and called on the Governor of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, Delta State Emergency Response Agency, Oshimili Local Government Council and other relevant agencies of government to come to the aid of the victims.
Mr. Jude Eziuno, Managing director of Haalimonwo Ventures, Akwukwu-Igbo, whose company was affected told Vanguard, yesterday, on phone, “what happened in Akwukwu-Igbo was a calamity. I can tell you that no fewer than 200 roofs were carried away by rainstorm.”
“The rain was severe and stormy. It started at about 5.30 pm, everybody in the community was affected, if it is not your house, it is your kitchen, toilet or shops in front of your house”. “There is wailing everywhere, we have never seen this kind of hurricane before,” he added.
