Journalist Exposes Her Privates While Interviewing Prime Minister On TV ( PHOTOS)

An X-rated TV prank has left the prime minister of Serbia feeling a little overexposed after he was flashed by a glamorous presenter during an interview.
The country's Socialist party leader Ivica Dačić was midway through a discussion about Balkan politics when the young woman, wearing a particularly short mini dress, uncrossed her legs to reveal she wasn't wearing any underwear. The YouTube video, a clear copy of the famous scene starring Sharon Stone in the 1992 film Basic Instinct, has already had more than 1.2million hits.
The stunt was a clear attempt to recreate the famous scene starring Sharon Stone in the 1991 film Basic Instinct The stunt was a set up by a candid camera show called Nemoguca Misija - which translates as 'Mission Impossible'. It begins with producers discussing the best way to embarrass Mr Dačić before he arrives for the interview. As he walks into the building, the presenter is seen removing her underwear, off camera in another room.
In scenes that are about as far away as you can get from the sort of political debate Jeremy Paxman delivers on Newsnight, the shocked politician stumbles over his words while having a quick look.

Reasons Why Young Adults Are More Likely To Engage In Anál Séx

The findings of the research by researchers at the Bradley Hasbro Children''s Research Center reflect recent data indicating that anál séx rates among ádults doubled between the years 1995 and 2004.

Being one of the first of its kind, the study has highlighted the little-known factors linked with heteroséxual anál intércourse among adolescents and young adults.

"The topic of anál inter course is often considered taboo - especially when discussed in the context of youth relationships - even though we know that this behavior is a significant risk factor for HIV and other séxually transmitted infections. It's critical that we recognize that more and more young people are engaging in anál séx so we can open the lines of communications and help them protect their séxual health," said lead author Celia Lescano, PhD, of the Bradley Hasbro Children's Research Center (BHCRC).

In the study, the scientists examined séxual behaviour of 1,348 adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 21 who had unprotected séx in the previous three months.

It was found that 16 percent had engaged in heteroséxual anal inter course within the timeframe, with condoms being used just 29 percent of the time.

Females who had heteroséxual anál séx were more likely to be living with their partners, to have two or more séxual partners and to have previously experienced coerced intér course.

Males who engaged in heteroséxual anál intercourse were more likely to identify themselves as being homoséxual, biséxual or undecided.

"These findings suggest that the factors associated with anál inter course among females in the study relate to the context and power balance of séxual relationships. We must teach teen girls and young women how to be assertive in séxual relationships, such as refusing unwanted séxual acts and negotiating for safer séx, whether it''s anál or va ginal," said Lescano, who's also an assistant professor of psychiatry (research) at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

But, many factors related to anál intér course were found to be consistent in both genders.

Generally, those who felt that using condoms decreased the pleasure of séx and those who used drugs at the time of inter course were engaged in riskier behaviours.

Such behaviours indicated that interventions should emphasize that séx can be both pleasurable and safe.

"An open dialogue between health care providers and their young patients about anal intercourse is becoming increasingly important, and clinicians should ask about anál séx during discussions about vag inal intércourse and protection - regardless of the patient's gender or reported séxual orientation," said Lescano.

The American Journal of Public Health publishes the study online

A Woman's Mind During An Orgásm (Must Read)

Rutgers University researchers have discovered that séxual árousal numbs the female nervous system to such an extent that she doesn’t feel as much pain—only pleasure.
Orgásm affects up to 30 different parts of the brain including those responsible for emotion, touch, joy, satisfaction and memory, found researchers.

The researchers asked eight women to stimu late themselves while lying under a blanket inside a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner, a tunnel-like machine often used to detect brain tumours.
Most women took less than five minutes to reach an orgásm although some took as long as 20.
During that time, the MRI scanner took images of their brain every two seconds to show which parts became active during the orgásm.

The scientists found that two minutes before the orgásm, the brain’s reward centres become active, the areas usually activated when eating food and drink.

Immediately before they reached the peak, other areas of the brain became affected such as the sensory cortex, which receives ‘touch’ messages from parts of the body and the thalamus, which relays signals to other parts of the body.

Once the orgásm has started other parts of the brain are activated such as those responsible for emotion.
The final part of the brain to be activated is the hypothalamus, the ‘control’ part of the brain, which regulates temperature, hunger, thirst and tiredness.

At the same time another area responsible for pleasure is activated - the nucleus accumbens - as well as the caudate nucleus, which is responsible for memory.

“In women, orgásm produces a very extensive response across the brain and body,” the Daily Mail quoted Barry Komisaruk of Rutgers University as saying.

“Some women raised their hands several times each session, often just a few seconds apart.
“So the evidence is that women tend to have longer orgásms and can experience several in rapid succession,” said Komisaruk.

A woman’s orgasm last an average of 10-15 seconds, whilst a man’s is thought to last for just six seconds.

The Niger Delta is synonymous with mostly two things – Crude Oil and Youth restiveness but a young man from Brass LG in Bayelsa state, is changing that perception and it can get better if only he gets all the necessary support.

Ifiemi Felagha, 36, built a light plane in the comfort of his homestead. The young man who works with an oil servicing firm, spent his leisure time over the past 8 years to bring his dream project - a light plane – to fruition which he named ‘Destiny.’

According to Felagha’s parents, they noticed from his childhood that he loved putting different things together although he achieved his latest feat even without a tertiary education.

The aircraft is however yet to take-off because Ifiemi is not a trained Pilot. He is now consulting with aviation experts but for now, he keeps moving the aircraft on his make-shift runway.

Third Mainland Crash Survivor: ‘I Swam Out Of The Vehicle Even Though I Don’t Know How To Swim.’

Olusola Oladimeji, the driver of the Toyota Sienna that fell off the Third Mainland Bridge into the lagoon on Saturday, has described his escape as a miracle.
swim
The father of three said contrary to reports by traffic and emergency officials, he was not on high speed when the incident occurred.

Oladimeji, who is a minister of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Church, said he was on his way home from work.

He said, “I work on the island and I left home for a meeting in the early hours of Saturday. After the monthly environmental sanitation, I started driving back home.

“I was driving at the speed of 60km/hr and was on the fast lane because the road was free. At Ebute Meta bypass, I saw two vehicles that had been involved in an accident but I kept on driving. Suddenly, everything went blank, I couldn’t see anything again, and I just found myself in the water.”

Oladimeji said he did not lose consciousness in the water and as such, was able to loosen the seat belt.
He said in the water, he saw a ray of light and swam towards it.

He said, “I was not on high speed. When the car hit the railing of the bridge, the airbag was not released.
“After falling into the water, I unfastened the seat belt and noticed that one of the doors of my car had broken off, so I swam out of the vehicle to the surface of the water even though I don’t know how to swim.
“It was while I was waving my hand that fishermen saw me and quickly came to my aid. They took me away from the scene and took me to a clinic located on the water where they administered the first aid.”
Oladimeji was later taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital where an X-ray scan was conducted on him.

“The doctors said that my leg was not fractured. They, however, cast my leg with Plaster of Paris because I had a sprain,” he said.

African woman invents anti-rape female condoms (LOOK)

An anti-rape female condom using a different design was invented by Sonnet Ehlers, a South African woman.

Ehlers was motivated to create it while working as a blood technician with the South African Blood Transfusion Service, during which time she met many rape victims.

Ehler mentioned that she was inspired to create RAPEX (later renamed to Rape-aXe) when a patient who had been raped stated, “If only I had teeth down there,” suggesting the myth of the vagina dentata. Initially called RapeX, the name was changed in 2006 upon discovering that RAPEX is also an EU warning system against dangerous goods on the market.

The Rape-aXe is a latex sheath embedded with shafts of sharp, inward-facing barbs that would be worn by a woman in her vagina like a female condom. If an attacker were to attempt vaginal rape, his penis would enter the latex sheath and be snagged by the barbs, causing the attacker excruciating pain during withdrawal and giving the victim time to escape. The condom would remain attached to the attacker’s body when he withdrew and could only be removed surgically, which would alert hospital staff and police.

Like most condoms, Rape-aXe also usually prevents pregnancy and the transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted Infections. Rape-aXe was unveiled on August 31, 2005 in South Africa. Although media coverage at the time implied that mass production was due to begin in April 2007, the device has never been marketed to the public and it remains unclear whether the product will ever be available for purchase.

Critics have accused her of developing a medieval device to fight rape. “Yes, my device may be a medieval, but it’s for a medieval deed that has been around for decades,” she said. “I believe something’s got to be done … and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman.”

CAF dismisses Egyptian ref who officiated Nigeria vs Zambia match

The 36 year old Egyptian referee who officiated the match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Chipolopo of Zambia on Friday January 25th, has been dismissed from the on-going 2013 Africa Cup of Nations as a result of poor officiating.

Ghead Grisha awarded a controversial penalty to Zambia in the 85th minute which enabled them draw level in the group C match.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF immediately sent a protest letter to the Confederation of African Football, CAF, asking the football governing body to look into the questionable call by Grisha.

A top official of CAF said today that Grisha 'has been sent home. He will have no further action at this Cup of Nations. His decisions did not tally with best practices of the refereeing profession and we would not allow anyone to start re-writing the rules of the game here'

Fire in Brazilian night club leaves 180 people dead, 200 injured

A fire swept through a crowded nightclub in southern Brazil early today Sunday January 27th, killing at least 180 people and leaving hundreds injured, police and firefighters told local media.

Fire broke out at popular night club, Kiss Club, in the city of Santa Maria, while a band was performing. There were over a 1000 people at the club when fire started at around 2 a.m. A stampede ensued immediately as party goers pushed and shoved each other to escape.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, officials said. A police spokesman told a radio station that a truck carrying 70 bodies arrived at the Municipal Sports Center, which they used as an improvised morgue.

"Sad Sunday", the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul tweeted. He said all possible action was being taken and that he would be in the city later in the day.

Nigeria Will Break In 2015 If.... - Buhari

**what happened in 2007 and 2011 will never happen again.
**there was no doubt Nigeria would be divided.
**“Ko a yi zaben gaskiya, ko kuma kowa ya rasa,” (there should be either a free and fair election or else everybody will lose).

Former head of state and presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the 2011 election, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), yesterday warned that unless the Jonathan Administration allows for a free and fair election come 2015, nobody would claim victory.

Buhari said there was no doubt Nigeria would be divided and all candidates in the general elections of that year would lose out unless justice was done to all.

The former ruler sounded this grim warning in his hometown Daura during the launch of an empowerment scheme initiated by Senator Hadi Sirika.

Buhari described the results of previous elections as a mess and total cheating of the innocent electorate, saying Nigerians will witness a “new development” in 2015.

“Nigerians will see a different Nigeria in 2015, because what happened in 2007 and 2011 will never happen again,” he said.

Buhari, easily the leading opposition figure in the country, argued: “We were cheated in the previous election; we went to court both in 2007 and 2011 to challenge the results. But we will not go to court after the 2015 election.”

The CPC leader stated firmly in the Hausa language: “Ko a yi zaben gaskiya, ko kuma kowa ya rasa,” meaning ‘there should be either a free and fair election or else everybody will lose’.

He pointed out that he alone could not restore the lost glory of the country unless good Nigerians support him, saying Nigeria lost its glory since the coming of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to power in “a dubious manner.”

He urged the Nigerian electorate in general to emulate the people of Igabi local government area who protected their votes in the recent council elections in Kaduna state.

According to him, the recent elections in Sokoto and Adamawa states were a mere child’s play because “there was no election,” and that this resulted to the high increase of poverty and unemployment in those states.

Buhari said he was satisfied with the performance of CPC-elected government officials across the country, saying their performance was as a result of their having been elected in a transparent manner.

You’re a failure, Obasanjo tells Okorocha

Obasanjo-and-Okorocha

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, described Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, as a “failure.”

Obasanjo said this just as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, likened the current crisis rocking the ruling party as a “surgery” which must bring some pain to members.
Obasanjo who was responding to guests who spoke during the grand finale of a civic reception organised in his honour by the South West Zone of the PDP said there was no way he could associate with Okorocha who had jokingly referred to the former President as his “colleague.”

Okorocha, a governor on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance had defected from the PDP to the All Nigeria Peoples Party where he contested for the presidential ticket of the party in 2003 but failed to secure it.

The Imo governor had earlier in his speech talked about his days as Special Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs to Obasanjo, saying he gave the ex-President advice that resulted in the good decisions that Obasanjo took while in office.

The Imo governor said, “Obasanjo is indeed PDP. But in the actual sense, he’s a national leader. He does not belong to the PDP alone but a national leader of Nigeria. If I have another opportunity to advise him, I will tell him to be the national leader of the country and not the national leader of the party.

“We are here to give honour to whom honour is due. Obasanjo will remain immovable and unshakable. He is a man that is very difficult to describe. He represents different things to different people. But for me, he represents a former colleague. We both ran for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And later when he appointed me as his adviser, I gave him all the good advice.

“All the good things he did for those eight years, I advised him but all the bad ones he did, I travelled out of the country. I want to join Nigerians to celebrate this icon — this great and steadfast Nigerian, who is not afraid of fighting any battle. But when he starts fighting he doesn’t stop until he finishes fighting. He’s a general’s general and a soldier’s soldier.”

But the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Godswill Akpabio, in his message immediately came to Obasanjo’s defence and told Okorocha that, “I was not as lucky as Governor Okorocha to work with him Obasanjo. So I did not give him advice. I’m very sure that even the few things that he did were actually taken out of the bad advice of APGA where Rochas Okorocha must have represented. Baba, I say the good ones are from you, not from him (Okorocha).”

In his reaction, the former president said he could not be a colleague to Okorocha.
He said, “I met Okorocha a long ago by virtue of the fact that he was brought up in Jos — one of the few cities that I found in the fifties and seventies as a genuine melting pot in Nigeria.  He is a true Nigerian and when he wants to pull me down, he will say we are colleagues. How can I be a colleague of a failure? You are a failure in contesting the presidency of Nigeria!”

Tukur in his speech said the crisis-ridden PDP was undergoing a surgery in which pains must be felt for the ruling party to get over its current unhealthy state.

He said, “Let us fight and win unity, peace, development for our dear nation. The surgery we have started in our party, the PDP is in line with our vision for a better society and the aspiration of all Nigerians. In this surgery we are aware we must lose some blood, undergo some pains and challenges but surely the result will eventually be one sacrifice that we made for ourselves.”

Vice-President Namadi Sambo who used the occasion to talk about the achievements of the Jonathan-led administration, described Obasanjo as a true nationalist.

'Jonathan belittled his office by kneeling in front of Adeboye publicly' -Tunde Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain Assembly tells Punch:
They have signaled the campaign by going to kneel down before Pastor Adeboye. See, I am not saying that pastors should not pray for presidents, that man was representing an office; a whole nation crumbling before men of God because of political advantage they think they can get. And if the prayer will bail him out, let us wait and see. The truth is who is preparing for 2015, which faction of the PDP? Is it the (Olusegun) Obasanjo faction? Or IBB faction? Or Jonathan faction? The governors’ faction? Because PDP is a house divided against itself; it’s a chicken that has begun to eat its own intestines. By going to kneel down in the open before the pastor, the man (Jonathan) did not even recognise the dignity of his office. If it were a private thing, it is okay for you to crawl or kneel but it is a whole nation. That office has been diminished by a man who does not know the worth of it and does not deserve to stay there for one more day.

Man Sells his 3 Children To Pay Off His Debts (PHOTO)

A lorry driver deep in gambling debts sold three of his children to pay off hiscreditors. The children’s mother, Liew Kim Yow, 27, said the 25-year-old man, whom she referred to as her “boyfriend” because they were not legally married, had suggested in September that his mother take care of their two sons, aged one and three and their five-year-old daughter, while they went to Singapore to work.

They have been living together in Serendah, Hulu Selangor, for seven years.

Liew, who is unemployed, stayed at home to take care of the children while the man worked as a lorry driver.

But after three months, she suspected something amiss because their plans to move to Singapore did not materialise and he kept giving excuses each time she wanted to see their children.

“He told me before that someone had offered him RM50,000 to adopt our son and RM20,000 for our eldest daughter. I told him that no matter how poor we were, we could not sell our children,” she said at the MCA Public Complaints and Services Department here yesterday.

On Dec 23 last year, she lodged a report against the man at the Serendah police station.

To her shock, she found out that he had lodged a report in October alleging that she had been missing from home since May.

In his report, he claimed that he had no choice but to give up his children for adoption as he could not afford to raise them single-handedly.

Denying that she had ever left home, Liew said her boyfriend was a compulsivegambler who had been in trouble with loan sharks before but his parents paid off his debts.

The man has since disappeared and attempts to contact him have failed.

Hulu Selangor OCPD Supt Norel Azmi Yahya Afendy confirmed having received the report.

Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong urged those who had “adopted” the children to contact his office immediately.

“As there were no court orders for these adoptions, they are not legal. If the adoptive parents’ refuse to come forward, we will bring them to court,” he said.

He said that if the children’s father was found to have “sold” them, he could be charged with human trafficking.

The Danger Of Receiving A Call While Charging Your Phone (MUST READ)

Many Nigerians are guilty of this.

I guess you all have to read this and adjust accordingly.

A few days ago, a fellow was charging the battery of his mobile phone at home.

Just at that time a call came in and he answered it with the charging instrument still connected to the outlet.

After a few seconds, electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the floor with a heavy thud. As you can see, the phone actually exploded.

His parents rushed to the room only to find him unconscious, with a weak heartbeat and burnt fingers.

He was rushed to the nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Cell phones are a very useful modern invention.

However, we must be aware that it can also be an instrument of death.

Never use the cell phone while it is hooked to the electrical outlet! If you are charging the cell phone and a call comes in, un-plug it from the charger and outlet.

We use yam hawking to spy on our targets – Terror suspects

boko haram

A suspect of the Jaji military formation bombing, Mohammed Idris, said on Friday that he and a colleague always pretended to hawk yams in order to spy on their targets.

He stated this when the State Security Service paraded him and another suspect, Ibrahim Mohammed, for their alleged involvement in the bombing of St. Andrews Protestant Military Church located in the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, Kaduna State on November 27, 2012.

A number of other suspects that were arrested in connection with the attack were still under investigation.
Mohammed from Ilobu in Osun State, said he accompanied the two suicide bombers, one Tasiu and Mallam Lawal, to the gate of the AFCSC, where he bade them farewell.

The terror suspect admitted that he procured the fertiliser used in priming the Toyota Matrix, which was one of the cars used for the Jaji suicide attacks.

Lawal spoke when he was paraded alongside Idris by the SSS in Abuja.
Deputy Director, Public Relations and Media, SSS, Marilyn Ogar, who briefed newsmen, explained that Mohammed was indoctrinated into the Boko Haram sect by the late Bashir Madalla, who also trained him in the use of firearms and priming of Improvised Explosive Devices.
According to her, Mohammed,18, had also participated in several attacks in Kaduna including the one on St. Rita Catholic Church, Badarawa, Kaduna.

“The suspect stated that Madalla sent Lawal, one of the suicide bombers, to Damaturu, Yobe State to retrieve military uniforms and weapons from the Boko Haram cell and that Lawal wore the military uniform with the rank of a captain, which afforded him free access into the military formation in Jaji,” Ogar stated.
Idris, 50, stated that he was indoctrinated into the Boko Haram ideology by one Lawal, a fellow yam hawker in Jalingo in August 2012, after which he was relocated to Kaduna and given a two-bedroom flat in Rafin Guza area, which served as the sect’s operational base.

He confessed to investigators that the Toyota Matrix used in the Jaji attacks was primed by Mohammed and Lawal at his residence and he served as a motivational preacher and father figure to the sect.
Idris was, however, not forthcoming when questioned by newsmen.

But Mohammed stated in Yoruba that he was living with his uncle in Kaduna and was about being put under apprenticeship as a motor mechanic when he was returned to his parents in his home town.

R*E*V*E*A*L*E*D! Boko Haram Leader, Malam Shekau in Mali.

**Shekau is hiding in Gao, Mali, receiving treatment from Gun wounds.
**the discovery of Shekau’s hideout and the training base for Boko Haram is one of the reasons for sending troops to Mali.
**Two Alpha jets has left to Niger Republic, from where they will launch the attack on the stronghold of the Malian Islamists.

Security agencies have discovered that the spiritual leader of the Boko Haram Islamic sect, Abubakar Shekau, who was wounded in a gun duel between soldiers of the Joint Task Force and members of his sect early this year, is hiding in Gao, a city in Northern Mali, receiving treatment from the Tuareg rebels.

Military Intelligence sources told Saturday Tribune on Friday that Shekau was ferried to Mali through porous routes in the vast Nigerian border with a neighbouring country in the north.

The source cited the discovery of Shekau’s hideout and the training base for Boko Haram sect members to unleash terror on Nigerians as a further justification of the action of the Federal Government to deploy 1,200 troops as well as Airforce fighter and transport aircraft to Mali to help flush out the Tuareg militants and their sponsors.

Shekau was said to have been shot at a checkpoint while he attempted to deceive operatives of the JTF by posing as a nomadic Fulani man who was returning from a journey.

A gunfight ensued when the vehicle carrying him and members of the sect approached a checkpoint and they discovered that the soldiers were waiting for him.

During the exchange of fire, Shekau and two other sect members with him escaped with gunshot wounds, while two other members of the sect were killed on the spot. About six AK-47 rifles were recovered from the vehicle.

The source noted that most of the weapons, including IEDS (Improvised Explosive Devices) recovered from Boko Haram members have been linked to those used during the Libyan uprising against the late Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

Addressing troops shortly before being airlifted to Mali on Thursday in Kaduna, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-General Azubuike Ihejirika, spoke of the need for officers and soldiers of the Nigerian army to be extra-vigilant, as there are indications that some terrorists may have sneaked into the country.

Two Alpha jets, led by newly decorated Air Vice Marshal Tayo Oguntoyinbo, departed the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport at about 4:25pm on Friday to Niamey, Niger Republic, from where they will launch the attack on the stronghold of the Malian Islamists Tuaregs.

Media gathered that part of the mission of the Nigerian troops deployed to Mali is also to fish out Shekau from his hideout in Gao, where he is currently receiving treatment, and bring him back to Nigeria to face trial for crimes against humanity.

Meet the Indian woman who has not eaten or drunk anything for 12 years (PICTURED)

Irom Sharmila – who holds the record for the world’s longest hunger-strike – passed another dark milestone in history (last year) when she marked 12 years without eating or drinking.

The 40-year-old from India’s north-east has been force-fed in a secure hospital as she continues to protest against the impunity enjoyed by the armed forces.

“We are observing the spirit of Sharmila by holding a candlelit vigil,” the woman’s brother, Singhajit, said from Imphal, the capital city of the state of Manipur. “I last was able to see her on 9 October. She expressed to me that she would not accept any award from any organisation until her demands have been fulfilled.”

The woman known as the Iron Lady of Manipur has devoted herself to the cause of human rights in a way that is hard to conceive. Since November 2000, when a group of soldiers from the Assam Rifles shot dead a 10 civilians standing at a bus-stop, she has refused to eat, drink or even brush her teeth. Charged with trying to commit suicide, she has been repeatedly arrested, detained and force-fed by tubes that are inserted into her nose twice a day.

Her sacrifice has focused on a struggle that is barely glimpsed in the rest of India, let among the wider world. A decades-long insurgency by up to 50 armed groups and the subsequent response by the government which has sent in thousands of troops, has created a dark, deadly situation in Manipur where the rule of gun – be it the gun of an insurgent or that of a member of the security forces – holds sway.

Sharmila, who has not seen her mother since her fast began, is demanding that the government overturn the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), a piece of legislation also in force in Kashmir, which makes it all but impossible to hold any soldier accountable for his actions. Campaigners say this law gives broad licence to the security forces to act with impunity.

Last month activists filed a petition with India’s highest court demanding to know why there had been more than 1,500 so-called ‘fake encounters’ – when security forces simply shoot suspects dead – in the state over the last 30 years. “In Tripura [another north-eastern state] there has been no violence for four years. In Nagaland there has been a ceasefire for 15 years and yet they are still declared ‘affected areas’ and this law is in place,” said Babloo Loitongbam, of the Manipur-based Human Rights Alert, an NGO. “It’s all to do with political expediency.”

In the last year or so, the situation in Manipur has calmed and the authorities have removed the provisions of the AFSPA from a handful of areas in Imphal. However, Sharmila has said she will continue her fast until it is removed from the entire state.

The woman who has been given a number of domestic and international honours for her campaign also recently announced she would no longer accept any awards while her fast continued. Mahasweta Devi, a celebrated human rights activist and writer from West Bengal, recently tried to honour the hunger-striker with another award but her brother declined, politely, saying that his sister wanted to wait until her struggle was completed. “After Sharmila comes out winning, she will collect it herself,” he said, according to reports in the local media.

For all Sharmila’s efforts, campaigners say they have little optimism that the government will respond to an issue about which the Indian public and the world is largely unaware of. “There has not been any change,” said Sanjoy Hazarika, an expert on India’s north-east who teaches at Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia university. “The cabinet has not even considered a proposal on this issue from the home ministry that was sent two years ago.”
