Make A Call While Driving And Go To Jail - FRSC Warns

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has announced a newly adopted strategy that would ensure that any person caught using the mobile phone while driving, would no longer be fined but immediately taken to court and jailed.

Corp Marshal, FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka said other offences like speed driving, dangerous overtaking and overloading would equally attract court action instead of the usual fines.

The FRSC boss, who was speaking at a news conference in Abuja, said these new measures are part of a newly launched campaign to reduce the increased spate of road crashes in the country.

Commercial bus drivers are now expected to install speed limit devices in their vehicles so they henceforth should not exceed 100km per hour.

National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) however admitted that some drivers are guilty of the aforementioned road accident causing crimes.

The FRSC says it is partnering with several organizations including oil companies to fulfill its promise to make Nigerian roads one of the safest in the world by the year 2020.

Riot at University of Uyo... Police kills Three

The Engineering students of the University of Uyo this afternoon went for a peaceful demonstration to the office of the school's Vice Chancellor, Prof Comfort Ekpo, after the VC mandated students to pay N100 for the school bus which used to be free. The school management had shifted most of the Science student courses to the school's permanent site which is about 20 minutes drive from the main campus, and then made the shuttle N100. That means students will have to pay N200 to and fro everyday to the permanent campus for most of their lectures.

This was what the students were protesting this afternoon when things went crazy. The peaceful protest turned violent after security officials at the V.C's office tried to stop the students from gaining access to the Vice Chancellor.

The students allegedly retaliated by throwing stones at the security officials, who then called for police back-up which led to the riot. The police arrived the scene and aggravated the situation by firing shots at the students, killing at least one student. Some say two. Some say three.

Angry students now proceeded to burn down the VC's office, the exams and records building, and a security office. Students have been evacuated from the hostel, and the school has been shut down indefinitely.

Stop the discrimination, it's not fair' - Nigerian Gay Community Cry Out

Nigeria's gay couples say they feel more threatened than ever after lawmakers passed a bill outlawing such marriages. If approved, any offender and supporter of such activities could face up to 14 years in prison.

The bill passed unanimously by Nigeria's House of Representatives on Thursday also criminalizes public displays of affection between same-gender partners.

It also says "any person who registers operates or participates in gay clubs, societies and organizations directly or indirectly, makes a public show of a same-sex amorous relationship commits an offence and shall be liable to a term of 10 years imprisonment."

Like in most other sub-Saharan countries, anti-gay sentiment and persecution of homosexuals is rife in Nigeria. Experts say the bill is likely to get popular support.

Rights taken
"It (the bill) takes away the fundamental rights accorded to Nigerians under the constitution," Rashidi Williams, director of Nigeria's Queer Alliance rights group told DW in an interview.

He says he is more concerned by the law because it targets even those outside the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. "If one just shows some alliance with persons from the LGBT community then they risk going to jail for 10 years," Williams lamented.

The bill which is awaiting President Goodluck Jonathan's approval to be made into law, permits for a much broader crackdown on lesbians and gay couples in the country.

Nigeria's LGBT community is already harshly discriminated against and most of them lead an underground lifestyle. Efforts by British news agency Reuters to get a comment from the presidency were unsuccessful.

Under the bill anyone who enters into a gay marriage or a civil union contract commits a criminal offence. Sodomy is already punishable under existing Nigerian federal law, however the crime referred to as "unnatural offence" which also covers getting intimate with animals and certain heterosexual acts has rarely been prosecuted.

Redefining marriage?
"Why is the government focusing on same-sex marriages when no one in the country is advocating for it?" Gay rights activist Rashidi Williams asked. He says all that the gay community is saying is "please treat us equal as every other citizen of this country."

According to Williams cases of blackmail and extortion on the part of the gay community are likely to surge because of the bill that has been passed. "People who have jobs would be sacked from their positions once their sexual orientation or gender identity gets known to their employers."

Jiti Ogunye, a human rights lawyer, told the French news agency AFP, the passing of the bill was nothing more but an unnecessary publicity stunt. "I call it legislative showmanship. This is really, really not a pressing national issue," Ogunye said. He argued that the politicians were likely seeking to defy mounting Western pressure over respect for gay rights.

Rethinking aid
British Prime Minister David Cameron has warned that his country will consider withholding aid from countries that do not recognize gay rights. The United States has also expressed concerns over the Nigerian legislation.

In 2012, US President Barack Obama ordered all government agencies that play an active foreign policy role to take steps to encourage gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights in foreign countries.

Such moves have previously helped to hold back or do away with anti-gay legislation in aid-dependent nations like Uganda and Malawi. However, this might not be the case with Nigeria, whose budget is funded by its multi-million dollar oil industry.

Nigeria's highly religious society supports tighter anti-gay measures. Africa's most populous nation with its 160 million people is roughly divided in half between Christians and Muslims.

Boko Haram Gave Us N5,000 Each To Burn Schools And Spy On Soldiers – Kid Suspects

Some kid suspects released by military authorities in Maiduguri on Friday said the Boko Haram sect paid them N5,000 each to burn primary schools and spy on soldiers.
some-of-the-58-women-and-children-released-by-military-authorities-in-maiduguri-and-damaturu-360x225
They were among 23 women and 35 children released to the governors of Borno and Yobe states by the Commander, 21 Armoured Brigade, Maiduguri, Brig-Gen. R.O Bamigboye, on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sa’ad Ibrahim.

The children, whose ages range between nine and 15 years, said they were given kegs of petrol by Boko Haram leaders and sent to burn schools in both states.

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, government officials and journalists listened in bewilderment as the children narrated how they were used by the extremist sect to burn schools and spy on soldiers.

One of them said they were taken to the Yobe State capital, Damaturu, and told to spy on soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force and report back to the Boko Haram commanders.

He said, “We were taken to Damaturu. We watched out for the soldiers at their unit and reported back to them. We were reporting either when soldiers were at ease or enjoying themselves and when they were off guard and we were paid for doing that.”

Another child suspect said, “I usually helped Boko Haram to leak information on military activities so that they could attack them (soldiers). My last job was to travel from Maiduguri to Gashua to spy on soldiers before I was caught.”

Yet another said, “We usually help Boko Haram to carry stolen items each time and sometimes help them to give information about people they want to attack and sometimes even help to hide their guns after attacks. They pay us N5000 after every operation. I regret what I did, I want to go home and ask for forgiveness from my father and mother for what I did; I also want to go to school.”

One of the boys said he was arrested last year after he was overheard talking about the people who burnt a school in Maiduguri and failed to inform the military.

“I was arrested because I know those who burnt the school without telling the soldiers. Some people heard me discussing about the people who burnt the school and reported me to the soldiers who arrested me,” he said.

One of the teenagers said they were paid N5,000 and provided with fuel in kegs to set schools ablaze in Maiduguri.

The release of the suspects was done in line with the Federal Government’s amnesty deal.
In Borno State, 20 detainees, comprising six women and 14 children arrested between 2012 and 2013 were set free and handed over to Shettima for rehabilitation and reintegration.

The 20 detainees were mostly arrested in Maiduguri, Bama in Borno and Damaturu in Yobe State.
Bamigboye, who supervised the handing over, said he was acting on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sa’ad Ibrahim.

This, he said, was in line with the directive of President Goodluck Jonathan to the army.
He explained that the detainees were arrested in connection with the roles they played in the insurgency.
The six freed women were Hajia Zainab Mohammed, 40; Hajia Karagama Mohammed, 55; Hajia Zari Mohammed, 40; Aishatu Mohammed Aji, 62; Hadiza Ahmad, 40; and Yakaka Goni Habib, 16.

The 14 children released were Abba Modu Aji,10; Mohammed Musa, 12; Ibrahim Mohammed, 15; Umar Bukar, 15; Mustapha Umaru, 14; Bashir Ali, 12; Musa Grema, 13; Abba Mohammed, 14; Baba Alhaji, 13; AbdulAziz Umar, 14; Ari Masa’a, 14; Bayi Mustapha, 14; Mohammed Ibrahim, 14 and Alhaji Goni, 14.

Meet 3 year old Nigerian photographer - Fuji Remet

I'm sharing this post for two reasons: One, to introduce Fuji to Nigerians so we can celebrate him and two, to discuss if it's OK for a 3 year old to already have a career. He has an exhibition coming up so yes, he has a career! CNN profiled the young budding photographer on Inside Africa yesterday and below is what they wrote about Lil Fuji...
While most children his age in Nigeria - and the rest of the world - are more concerned with their toys than a career, Onafujiri "Fuji" Remet has already embarked on his mission to become a professional photographer.
Proud dad Pius Kugbere Remet sent in these images of his talented young son posing with family and at work in Lagos.
Himself an artist and graphic designer, he says Fuji's inspiration came from the work of his creative family.
Little Fuji even has an exhibition coming up in Lagos on June 8. Not bad for a three-year-old.

How JTF uncovers Lebanese terror cell in Kano

Culled from Punch
The Joint Task Force on Thursday said it had uncovered a Lebanon-based Hezbollah armoury and terror cell in Bompai, Kano State.
The force, which said it found large cache of arms and ammunition, also confirmed the arrest of three persons in connection with the armoury and the cell.
A Lebanese national currently out of the country reportedly owns the premises where the armoury and the cell were found at No 3, Gaya Road, Off Bompai Road in the ancient city.
A statement by the JTF spokesman, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, said the JTF operatives, comprising officials of the 3rd Army Brigade in Kano and the State Security Service conducted the operations.
The operatives, he said, uncovered an underground bunker in the premises where large quantities of assorted weapons were hidden.
Iweha, who said the construction of the bunker was special, listed anti-tank weapons, rocket propelled guns and anti-tank/personnel mines as some of the dangerous weapons found in the premises.
He added that the weapons and ammunition were concealed in coolers, drums and bags.
According to him, the latest recovery followed an ongoing robust counter-terrorism investigation by the SSS.
Confirming the existence of a Hezbollah cell in the country, Iweha noted that the SSS had arrested one Mustapha Fawaz, co-owner of Amigo Supermarket and the Wonderland Amusement Park, in Abuja.
The arrest of Fawaz, Iweha said, led to the arrest of another Lebanese terror suspect, Abdullah Tahini, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with over$60,000
He added, “Thereafter on May 26, 2013, one Talal Roda, also a Lebanese with a Nigerian Passport, was arrested in the same house.
“All those arrested have confessed to have undergone Hezbollah Terrorist Training and further implicated one Fauzi Fawad, also a co-owner of Amigo Supermarket and Wonderland Amusement Park.”
When one of our correspondents contacted the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Chris Olukolade, he described the discovery of the arms and the arrest of the Lebanese importers as “a major breakthrough.”
The action of the JTF operatives, he said demonstrated the commitment of security agencies to riding the country of illegal arms.
Meanwhile, the SSS said the weapons  were intended for use against “Israeli and Western interests”.
“This is the handwork of Hezbollah,” Bassey Ettang, director of the SSS said in Kano.
“You can also be sure that if a group like this is existing, then it may even lend support to some of the local terrorists we have on the ground.”
Hezbollah is a Shia military and political movement based in Lebanon considered by the United States to be a terrorist organisation.
The sect was conceived by Muslim clerics and funded by Iran following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, and was primarily formed to offer resistance to the Israeli occupation.
Its leaders were inspired by former Iranian leader, Ayatollah Khomeini, and its forces were trained and organised by a contingent of Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Hezbollah’s 1985 manifesto listed its four main goals as “Israel’s final departure from Lebanon as a prelude to its final obliteration.”
