Bank driver arrested with 19 ATM cards, N652,000

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested Dare Oladujoye, a driver with Zenith Bank, for allegedly being in possession of 19 Guaranty Trust Bank ATM cards and the sum of N652, 000.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect was using the cards to withdraw money from an ATM at Ogba branch of GTB when a security guard raised the alarm. The Commissioner of Police for the state police command, Mr. Umar Manko, said as of the time of his arrest, the suspect had withdrawn N652, 000 from the ATM.

Manko said, “On July 26, 2012, around 8:30pm, there was a distress call that there was commotion at GTB, Ogba branch. On getting there, the suspect was seen with 19 ATM cards. “He is an employee of Zenith Bank and we wondered what he was doing with the 19 cards. He was arrested and as of the time of his arrest, he had cashed N652, 000. The matter is under investigation.”

The suspect however denied stealing the ATM cards. He said whenever he lent people money, he would collect their ATM cards as collateral and return them after payment. He said, “I usually loan people money and I’ve been doing it for over a year. Whenever I loan people money, I will collect their ATM cards and their Personal Identification Numbers. When they repay me, I return their cards to them.

“However, if they don’t pay me back in cash, I go to withdraw money from their accounts through the ATM.” When quizzed on where he got the money which he lent people, he said he was into various kinds of businesses. He also said he had friends in the banking sector who helped him with funds.

He said, “I am a very hard working person. I joined Zenith Bank as a driver over three years ago and in less than a year, I bought a tricycle which I leased to another driver that gives me returns on a regular basis.
“The following year, I bought two tricycles bringing the total number to three. I make N150,000 monthly from the tricycles and N60,000 from my salary. I also get credit facilities through my connections in the banking sector.

“On the day I was arrested, I went to withdraw money on Thursday night with some of the cards when a security guard raised the alarm. I did not steal those cards. I know the owners of the cards and I have their numbers on my phone.”

Meanwhile, the command has warned members of the public to be very careful when buying vehicles so as not to buy stolen ones. The warning became imperative following the arrest of two mechanics who allegedly received six stolen vehicles and even sold some to members of the public. Manko said buyers could sense stolen vehicles by their cheap prices.

It was learnt that on July 7, 2012, Sunday Okoduwa came with a report that his car was stolen on Victoria Island. Policemen later traced the car to a workshop in Agidingbi and arrested a man identified simply as Abdusalam, who in turn claimed that he bought it from one Idowu Adegboyega.

PUNCH Metro learnt that when Adegboyega was arrested and could not give a satisfactory explanation, his house was searched and some documents were found which led to the recovery of six other vehicles.
A police source said, “When we searched the suspect’s house, some documents were recovered which led to the recovery of six other vehicles.

“All the vehicles were registered in the name of one Oti Olusekola Jacob, who is believed to belong to the gang of armed robbers in Lagos.” In a related development, the police have arrested 12 armed robbery suspects. Police authorities said the suspects belonged to a syndicate that specialised in snatching vehicles from the owners at gunpoint. The police alleged that the suspects operated in Ikorodu where they robbed and also sold vehicles.

According to the police, Ahmed Abdullahi, Azeez Abiodun, Olusoga Taiwo, Wasiu Azeez and Dele Balogun are among the suspects arrested. It was learnt that three of the suspects, Adebiyi Mafimisesin, Lekan Aibinuomo and Okalawon Akinpelu; were receivers of stolen vehicles, which were either Toyota or Honda products.

A police source said, “The case emanated from Ikorodu Police Station and was reported on June 20, 2012 by a complainant who was attacked and robbed of his Toyota Sienna Space bus. “We swung into action and we discovered where they keep stolen vehicles and sell to buyers. We recovered six vehicles; Toyota Sienna, Toyota Corolla, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and two others. “We also recovered single-barrelled locally-made shotguns and 24 live cartridges and one expended cartridge.”

We were offered N20m to kill Oshiomhole’s aide, says suspect

A suspect in custody in connection with the murder of Olaitan Oyerinde, the Private Secretary to Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, has reportedly told police interrogators that he was offered N20m for the job.

He said he was paid N200,000 as part payment with which he recruited four others.
Five suspects, including the Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Rev. David Ugolor, have been arrested in connection with the murder.

Rev. Ugolor was picked up on Friday by the investigating team from the Force CID in Abuja. His office and residence were ransacked. He was arrested after the suspect named one “David” as the sponsor of the murder.

Police sources said the suspect identified Rev. Ugolor during an identification parade as the “David” that sponsored the killing. It was gathered that the suspect told police investigators that the deal to kill Olaitan was sealed at a restaurant in Benin City and that Rev. Ugolor pointed Olaitan to him at a bureau de change where the late Olaitan had gone for a transaction.

He said they trailed the late Olaitan to a place where he (Olaitan) and Ugolor had a drink before following him home to carry out the killing. Ugolor took the late Olaitan home the night he was shot and he was the person called by Olaitan’s wife to take him to the hospital after he had been shot.

Police sources said Ugolor and the suspect met on Sunday. Ugolor reportedly questioned him.
Ugolor, however, said he was being framed up for the murder of Olaitan. A statement signed by the Programme/Policy Officer of ANEEJ Innocent Edemhanria, in Benin City said the relationship that existed between the late Olaitan and Rev. Ugolor was convivial and neither of them could plot the killing of the other.
The statement said: “The suspect who is accusing David Ugolor is of a northern Nigeria origin and is completely unknown to Rev. David Ugolor, colleagues and friends. At the moment, the police are still holding onto David as they carry out their investigations on the allegation we consider spurious.”

“We suspect strongly that somebody high up somewhere is framing up our Executive Director Rev. David Ugolor, over the murder of the personal aide to Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.
“Rev. David Ugolor is a life saver, not taker as his natural penchant for poverty eradication, enlarging the voice of the voiceless, assisting the poor and needy is unparalleled in his almost 25 years of effective and result-oriented activism.

“While, we wouldn’t want to obstruct police investigations on the murder of our friend, Comrade Olaitan Oyerinde, as a law abiding corporate citizen, we insist that Rev. David Ugolor is innocent of any accusation being leveled against him. We call for his immediate release so he can rejoin his family.”

The late Olaitan was murdered on May 4 at his Benin City home by unknown gunmen.

SHOCKING!!! Parents Now Sell Their Children For N4000 - N5000 In Makurdi

The Quick Response Group Team of the Nigerian Army in Lokoja has arrested a human trafficking suspect, Sunday Agbo from Benue State, revealing to journalists that trade in children from Makurdi is now an industry.

According to the commandant of Army Record, Major General Alphonso Chukwu, investigations reveal that Agbo has been ‘securing’ children for sums ranging from N4,000 to N5,000 by telling their parents he is getting them jobs as domestic helps in Lagos.

While presenting the suspect to journalists on Friday, Major Chukwu said he was arrested with 10 children – six boys and four girls aged seven to 19 – on Thursday along the Itobe-Ajaokuta road. He was in a ash colour Toyota Camry car with the registration number CW 322 LSD, headed to Lagos.

When the suspect was confronted by the men of the Quick Response Group, he first claimed the children belonged to him. Interrogation later led to a confession that they were given to him by a Madam Janet Akpa, an agent from the same village who asked him to deliver the children to another agent in Lagos.

One of the children, Blessing Jacob, who said she had just finished an examination to SSS 2 said she was told to follow the suspect to Lagos only for holidays and temporary work.

Shell Ordered To Pay Nigeria N805 Billion Over Oil Spill

Nigeria’s oil regulator has asked industry giant Shell to pay N805bn ($5bn, £3.2bn) for a spill off the country’s southern coast last December.

The disclosure was made during a parliamentary hearing on the matter.

A leak at the Bonga field during a transfer of oil to a tanker led to 40,000 barrels spilling into the Atlantic Ocean.

A Shell spokesperson said there was no need for a fine as everything had been done to prevent environmental damage.

The Bonga field, operated by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (Snepco), is approximately 120km (75 miles) offshore and produces 10% of Nigeria’s oil exports.

The spill was contained before it reached the shore.

The head of Nigeria’s National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency urged MPs on the House of Representatives’s environment committee to approve his proposal.

“Although adequate containment measures were put in place to combat the Bonga oil spill, it however posed a serious environmental threat to the offshore environments,” Peter Idabor said.

“The people could not fish after a long period after the spill,” he later told the BBC’s Focus on Africa programme.

Quote
“So that’s why we are looking at the damages. If the people said they will not pay, so be it. But we want to make it very clear that it’s wrong for them to say they cannot pay. Are they denying that they spilled 40,000 barrels of crude oil into the waters?” he asked.

But Shell said it believed there no “basis in law for such a fine”.

Snepco responded to this incident with professionalism and acted with the consent of the necessary authorities at all times to prevent environmental impact as a result of the incident,” a spokesperson for the Anglo-Dutch company said in a statement sent to the BBC.

Most previous oil spills in Nigeria – one of the world’s biggest oil producers – have been onshore. Many have been caused by sabotage or militant attacks.

Last year, a UN report into spills in Ogoniland found that the region could take 30 years to recover.

In March, lawyers representing a fishing community in Ogoniland began a case against Shell in a London court over recent oil spills.

AMAZING!: Scientists Discover Planet Completely Made of Diamond!

Astronomers have spotted an exotic planet that seems to be made of diamond racing around a tiny star in our galactic backyard.

The new planet is far denser than any other known so far and consists largely of carbon. Because it is so dense, scientists calculate the carbon must be crystalline, so a large part of this strange world will effectively be diamond.

Quote
“The evolutionary history and amazing density of the planet all suggest it is comprised of carbon — i.e. a massive diamond orbiting a neutron star every two hours in an orbit so tight it would fit inside our own Sun,” said Matthew Bailes of Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne.
Lying 4,000 light years away, or around an eighth of the way toward the center of the Milky Way from the Earth, the planet is probably the remnant of a once-massive star that has lost its outer layers to the so-called pulsar star it orbits.

Pulsars are tiny, dead neutron stars that are only around 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) in diameter and spin hundreds of times a second, emitting beams of radiation.

In the case of pulsar J1719-1438, the beams regularly sweep the Earth and have been monitored by telescopes in Australia, Britain and Hawaii, allowing astronomers to detect modulations due to the gravitational pull of its unseen companion planet.

The measurements suggest the planet, which orbits its star every two hours and 10 minutes, has slightly more mass than Jupiter but is 20 times as dense, Bailes and colleagues reported in the journal Science on Thursday.

In addition to carbon, the new planet is also likely to contain oxygen, which may be more prevalent at the surface and is probably increasingly rare toward the carbon-rich center.

Its high density suggests the lighter elements of hydrogen and helium, which are the main constituents of gas giants like Jupiter, are not present.

Just what this weird diamond world is actually like close up, however, is a mystery.

Woman Stabs Her Son To Spite Her Ex-Husband

An 11 year old Nigerian boy is battling to live at a Kano hospital after being stabbed by her mother, Joy Akule, 28, who was depressed after separating with the father of the teenager.

The lady (pictured above) who hails from Katsina-Ala in Benue state told journalists at Kano state Police headquarters that she transferred the aggression she had for her ex-husband to the innocent child.

“I wanted to kill him to bury the memory of his father because each time I see him, he reminds me of his father’s wickedness to me,” she said.

According to the state Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim K. Idris, Joy on 21 July at Sabuwar Abuja Quarters, Kano, northwest Nigeria used a knife and stabbed her son on his stomach, bursting the intestines.
The boss who raised alarm over the spate of rape involving teenagers in the state said his Command has resolved to ensure prosecution of rapists in the state and advised parents to keep watchful eyes on their children.
He revealed that on 17 July, Abubakar Ya’u, 20, of Jama’ar Ladan in Minjibir Local Government Area lured a six year old girl into his room and raped her.
Also, on 15 July, Ismaila Jibrin, 48, of Rimin Kebe Quarters lured a 4 year old girl into his room and had carnal knowledge of her.
Police also arrested Taofeek Adekunle, an Oyo state indigene, at Kas village, BUK Road for defrauding unsuspecting individuals to the tune of N5.5 million.

“Taofeek Adekunle is the promoter of an illegal Finance House named Finance Empowerment Programme Organization with Head Office at Ado Bayero Shopping Complex located at number 12 New Road, Sabon Gari.
“He is also the initiator of the Traders Multi Purpose Cooperative Society Limited. The Certificate of Registration of the two outfits were forged as he procured them from a tout who specializes in printing government documents.
“The suspect who has a network of marketers all over Kano collected the some of N5.5 million from 328 victims with the promise to give them credit facility.
“The method adopted by the fraudster is to ask his victims to pay 20 per cent of the credit facility before he disburses the loan. After collecting the percentage, the transaction stops there as he would not disburse the loan as promised,” CP Idris narrated.
He also disclosed that 17 police men from the Command are currently undergoing trial at the Command’s Orderly Room for extorting money from members of the public, and urged Kano residents to desist from giving money to police men on duty.

PHOTO:Drunken BBA Female Contestant Strips Off Clothes

After days of alcohol ban in the ongoing Big Brother Africa Stargame House, housemates were able to have a taste of it two days ago. For Jannatte, just two shots of booze were enough to make a 'factory reset' to her body system.

This could explain why she stripped uncloth and showed her behind in the presence of fellow housemates. The Ugandan joined her other housemates excluding Lady May and Prezzo at the Jacuzzi soon after the housemates took some shots of the booze.

Jannette, who once disclosed to ex-housemate, Chris that she was a virgin, stumbled out of the Jacuzzi and stripped down her knickers to show her butt. This has now made Biggie to rationalise alcohol in the House due to the failure to control their behaviours after taking alcohol.

The show is less than 10 days to wrap up. The winner of the competition takes 300,000 US Dollars.

News: Students held for abduction, Rape, Fake currency.

The Kwara state Directorate of the State Security Service (DSS) friday paraded seven tertiary institution students in Ilorin, the state capital over alleged abduction and rape.

Other offences allegedly committed by the suspects include cultism and possession of fake currency notes.
The suspects are Abdulrasak Abubakar, Musa Sikirullahi; Kamaldeen Isiaka; Olanrewaju Lawal; Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Tunde Yusuf and Abdularaham Jimoh

The state Director, DSS Williams Ologba told reporters shortly before parading the suspects that items recovered from them included cult masks, charms, locally made pistol, three different sizes of cutlass, and N72, 000 fake currency notes in N500 denominations.

He added that the suspects were students of one of the state colleges of education, saying that “there was information that a female student of one of the colleges of education in the state was abducted and raped by four other people.” Ologba, who said there was a resurgence of cult activities in the state, added that items displayed were recovered from the suspects during the raid of their hideouts.

He said two of the suspects allegedly raped one of their female colleagues, adding that the culprits who were arrested, subsequently, named other members involved in the crime. Mr. Ologba who said investigations had revealed that cult members have declared every July as their month of cult activities, appealed to members of the public to expose suspected cult members in their communities as part of measures to keep them out of the society.

His words: “It has become necessary to invite you because of the recent development in the state. Not too long ago we have incident of cult activities where two cult members were killed and one of them was beheaded. We were made to understand that the beheading was to hide the identity of the victim. The state government had taken resolute measures to check further occurrence.

“There was information that some students of one of the colleges of education in the state was abducted and raped by four other people. In the course of the investigation, the culprits were arrested and other members of the gang were arrested. In the course of our search, these items were found there. Seven people were arrested.

“They were arrested in connection with abduction, rape and cult activities. Their arrest followed the cooperation of others. If the victims had not reported, it could have been difficult for us to make these arrests.

“We are urging members of the public to help us get the perpetrator so that we can take measures to protect the society and take the culprits to where they can be reformed and they will join the society after reformation.

David Mark Demands Crack down on Social Media

Senate President, Senator David Mark, Thursday, called for a check on the menace of the social media on the Nigerian society, saying that people now use them to demean their leaders.

I Didn’t Love My Husband At First- Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

Anytime Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde speaks about her husband, her face lights up in a smile.

And then, no question about the sort of relationship they both share is complete without the shapely actress saying, “If I had not married him, I would not have married anyone else.”

And this is quite understandable, as their union of 16 years has weathered the storm and is one of the few in the industry that is scandal free.

Surprisingly, the actress says scandals are expected when an individual is famous. As such, they add up in making her life story more interesting. She adds that she is not bothered because her husband is very understanding.

“It would have been extremely painful if my husband takes things to heart, then it would have been a roller coaster ride for me and then I have to go through the problem again and again. God has been great you know, ‘the guy no get wahala,” She quips.

As a veteran in the marriage business, Omosexy, as the actress is fondly called reveals that the love was not instantaneous. “I always tell people that when I met him. I was not in love with him but he says for him it was love at first sight so I had to grow to love him. I was attracted to him because of his maturity. I saw the ability for him to see me. I mean, he knows me more than I know myself. It is just weird I can’t explain. You just can’t get it. But he feels my pain, it is easy for him.

When their paths first crossed, a young Omotola had just lost her father; hence the emotional trauma she was experiencing at that time was overwhelming.

Then her husband showed up with a ray of hope and then she fell for his charming nature. “In those days I was young so there were ways I particularly handle things that were immature so I would snap very fast because I was short-tempered. So many people will think I was very difficult even my mother. But he would tell her to leave me alone. Even then, my mother will say ‘you will not marry, there is no one that will marry you,’’ She says with a smile.

Describing her husband as her love ‘therapist’, Ekeinde attributes her spiritual growth to her husband. “I have even gone closer to Christ because of his exemplary behavior and the way he handles things. With the maturity I find in him, I can admire that and then emulate him. That is the connection and the way I have been able to live with him.”

Asked if she considers herself a doting mother to her four children, the actress lets out a gale of laughter, saying , “In my own mind yes. In fact my kids think I am their situation too much. So I am thinking that if I was around, they would have run away from the house. I feel I am a very hands on mum in fact I just got back from Ghana and they were telling me that I am always on the phone with them. Even though my husband is always around, I know what they are doing every minute. I think I am a bit too strict with them maybe because I am taking after my mother. She was a disciplinarian to the core.”

6 Feared Killed In Renewed Cult War In Edo

Four persons in the last two days were reportedly killed at different locations in Benin City, the Edo State capital following a renewed cult war between Aiye confraternity and Black Axe.
The latest was the murder of a middle-aged man at a beer parlor along Zabayor Street in Benin at about 10: 30 pm Tuesday night.

He was said to have been trailed by his assailants numbering about six, who stormed the drinking joint and on sighting their target opened fire on him repeatedly on the head as other customers at the beer parlour took to their heels.

Edo State Joint Task Force, (JTF), was said to have arrived the scene shortly after the assailants had fled scene.

Aiye fraternity and Black Axe have been engaged in an age-long supremacy tussle which had left over 30 dead and several others injured in past three years.

One Nosa Ebohon, an engineering graduate of the University of Benin popularly called ‘biggy” was also killed yesterday along Adolor College Road.

He was said to have been invited by unknown person to a beer palour, on appearing for the invitation two armed youths shot at him on the chest.

The body of the ‘biggy’ has been reportedly deposited at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.
Sources have, however, attributed the renewed gang war in the state to fallout occasioned by the ‘sharing formula’ of largesse from politicians in the just concluded governorship election in the state.

Twisted: From left, Sipho Mbele, David Motaung and Patrick Petrus Radebe smiled in court as they admitted to their sick crimes

Even in a country that sees 44 murders a day, the case has left the public horrified.
A gang of robbers gunned down a father, raped and murdered his wife.

Then, in a final act of sickening brutality, they drowned the couple’s 12-year-old son in scalding bath water. Amaro Viana was murdered to prevent him from identifying the three housebreakers who carried out the raid in suburban South Africa.

The gang included the family’s gardener and the son of a domestic servant.
It was claimed they were motivated by the way they had been treated by the Viana family.

Appearing in court yesterday, the gardener Patrick Radebe, 24, confessed to being part of the gang which broke into their home in October last year. Vereeniging Regional Court heard that, after gaining access to the house in Walkerville, a suburb of Johannesburg, the gang lay in wait for Amaro’s engineer father Tony, 53, to arrive home.

When he walked through the front door, they attacked him with golf clubs and a machete-like knife known as a panga before tying him up and ordering him to tell them how to open the family safe.

Torn apart: Amaro with his mother Geraldine and father Tony, who were shot to death by the robbers, along with Gabriela Correia, Mr Viana's daughter by his first marriage

When Mr Viana’s wife Geraldine, 43, and her son returned to the property, they too fell victim. Mother and son were tied up in separate rooms.

Two of the men then raped Mrs Viana before both she and her husband were shot dead. According to their court confession, Radebe and his co-accused Sipho Mbele, 21, realised that the couple’s son, if left alive, may be able to identify them to police.

‘We went to the bathroom and turned on the tap,’ the pair’s statement read, ‘We gagged him because he was crying. We forced him into the bath face down, knowing that he would drown.’

The Viana’s family dog was also killed when its stomach was slit open with a knife.
Thankfully Mr Viana’s daughter from his first marriage, Gabriela, was not at her father’s home when the robbers struck.

According to one report they were led back to their cells smiling after being in court.

Army presents anti-bombing devices to Churches, Mosques

CALEB AYANSINA

ABUJA – Nigerian Army, Thursday, unveiled and presented vehicle stoppers to some Churches and Mosques, as part of its corporate social responsibility in curtailing the spate of suicide bombing at worship centres across the country.

Presenting the devices in Abuja, the Chief of Civil Military Affairs, Major Gen. Bitrus Kwaji said the vehicle stoppers were designed to stop any vehicle from all angle at any speed.

He added that the anti-bombing devices would be distributed to the representatives of Christian and Muslim bodies, who should in turn produce it in mass for distribution, while stressing that security is everybody’s business.

His words, “it has been discovered that most attacks of suicide bombers are being carried out with vehicles loaded with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The mode of operation is simple as a suicide bomber drives his vehicle straight into his target and explosion occurs.

“In order to disallow bombers from reaching their targets, this invention comes in handy as it forcefully stops any vehicle that comes in contact with it at whatever speed.

“The unfolding security challenges confronting the nation amongst which is the Boko Haram terrorist menace have continued to hinder the congress of the transformation agenda of Mr President as well as the development of the nation at large.

“The terrorists over the years have continued to attack places of worship (churches and mosques) in order to destabilize the nation. This has necessitated the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) to charge all corps and services of the Nigerian Army to provide ways and means of curtailing this menace.

“This charge has yielded a lot of responses as we witnessed the commissioning of an indigenous Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) by the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces during the recently concluded Nigerian Army Day Celebration in Kaduna.

Receiving the devices on behalf of the Religion Bodies, Very Rev. Monday Okonkwo of the Methodist Church, Nyanya and the Executive Secretary of the National Mosque Abuja, Alh. Ibrahim Jega expressed satisfaction with Military Authorities, just as they promised to be security conscious, to complement the efforts of security agents, in riding the country of terrorism”.

They also called on faithful to join hands with authorities in their various churches and mosques, to prevent any further attack, and report any suspicion to the relevant authorities, insisting that, government can not do it alone.
