A police inspector, Ahamba Njoku, has been shot dead by robbers in Aba, the commercial hub of Abia, the police said on Saturday.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Abia, Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He said Njoku was killed at Omuma Road, Eziama, a suburb of Aba, by hoodlums on Thursday night about 11pm during an exchange of gunfire while he was on a patrol with other policemen.
Ogbonna said two policemen also sustained bullet injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, suspected Boko Haram militants on Friday set ablaze the Bulabulim Ngarnam Police Station in Maiduguri, killing at least one person.
Also a traditional ruler, Alhaji Bello Kagarawal, was shot dead in Gombe state, as he left a mosque on Friday.
Kagarawal was walking out of the mosque when the gunmen attacked him, Gombe police spokesman Ahmed Gidaye Mohammed said.
He added that there was no known motive for the attack.
