The ex-Minister who is facing corruption charges had tried to befriend
President Goodluck in 2010 after he ascended to the presidency when
president Yar'adua died. He was one of the first persons to declare that
he could support President Jonathan to run if he met some conditions.
In the same year, El-Rufai fell out with Buhari and openly called him
"perpetually unelectable" and accused him of having a "parochial" focus
unsuited to ruling Nigeria.
However, in a remarkable switch after he was spurned by the President, El-Rufai turned to bashing Dr. Goodluck Jonathan while praising his former enemy, Buhari, before eventually joining his party, the CPC hoping to actualize his political ambitions there.
