President Goodluck Jonathan has taken a swipe at past leaders for their failure to develop technology in the country.
Jonathan, who was in Lagos on Friday to launch the first locally-made warship, blamed the negligence of past leaders for the country’s under-development.
The warship was built by Nigerian Naval engineers.
The President arrived the Nigerian Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island in Lagos, amidst tight security personally supervised by the Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubukar.
Abubukar was said to have arrived Lagos on Thursday with several stern-looking police officers to ensure that proper security was on ground for the president’s visit.
During the commissioning, Jonathan stated that the country’s reliance on already made goods had negatively affected the development of technology and indigenous goods in the country.
In order to correct the trend, the president vowed to pay more attention to technology and the recruitment of the country’s best brains to harness the technological prowess needed for the development of the country.
“Nigeria at independence had Nigerian Airways, Nigerian shipping lines and others and they were all doing well,” he said.
“We were told that some of the countries that were at par with us then are now building aircraft, ships and even going to the moon. But because there was no indigenous touch, because we refused to embrace technology, all these died.”
In his address, the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ola Ibrahim, boasted that the Nigerian Navy is capable of defending the country’s territorial waters from any invasion.
Ibrahim added that government has approved two Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the navy, to check pirate activities on the sea.
